In GATE Social Studies students will get to experience history and civics. Students will experience this with the History Alive and Government Alive curriculum. All students will be challenged to think critically and creatively on a consistent basis. Being proficient in modern day technology use, web-based applications and trouble-shooting skills are extremely important to be successful in GATE Social Studies.
6th grade World History
Course Description
6th Grade US History covers the time period of early civilizations to the fall of the Roman Empire and the spread of Islam. The course will focus on ancient Chinese, Egyptian, Greek and Roman Civilizations emphasizing their culture and impact on their geographic area. Students will be using the History Alive Curriculum which focuses on multiple intelligence and cooperative learning.

Neolithic Comic Book, various cooperative learning activities and presentations, Ancient Chinese technology project, Drama and role-playing
7th Grade Civics
Course Description
7th grade Civics explores the function of the United States government, its foundational history and current day application. Students will focus on the creation of the constitution, the Bill of Rights; participate in the legislative, judicial and executive processes. Students will also learn US geography and Economics.
Projects and Activities (not a comprehensive list)
Bill of Rights song, Political campaigning, posters and national convention, Supreme Court Case reviews, debates and role-playing, web-based technology use and projects.
EOC - Each Civics Student will take the End-of-Course exam which has a large bearing on the overall grade for the year and their promotion to the next grade level.
8th Grade US History
Course Description
8th grade US History covers European Colonization through the Civil War. Highlights will include the 13 colonies, Revolutionary War, Creation of Constitution (Civics), Westward Expansion, Slavery, and the Civil War. Students will be using History Alive! Curriculum which focuses on multiple intelligences learning and group collaboration.
Projects and Activities (not a comprehensive list)
Colonial Fair (market a colony), Capture the Flag, Create a game on an historical concept, movie trailer, telegraph project, Constructing and testing a caravel, designing and building a liberty pole, interacting with a cotton gin, constructing a “mail me to freedom” box to duplicate the one used by Henry “Box” Brown, creating a metaphorical Road to Revolution timeline, planning a fur trading fort, and many more!
