Stem Students have one language arts teacher. They do not have a separate reading class, the reading portion is obtained in their ELA class.
6th Grade
In 6th grade STEM language arts, we focus on reading literature, writing, spelling, and grammar. We study Greek mythology and will do several research projects throughout the year.
7th Grade
Throughout Language Arts students will continue to grasp skills in grammar, writing, and spelling. Students utilize interactive notebooks to teach skills, but will then are assessed through various writing projects that will allow for them to adapt to their learning style and interests. Students are also challenged to complete one book a month through a Book Blog challenge. Students are required to read nine different genres, and a free choice in this challenge.
8th Grade
The Oasis Language Arts curriculum emphasizes the Common Core ELA standards in reading, writing, language, and speaking & listening, and it fosters college and career readiness. These standards can be found at www.corestandards.org. Oasis Language Arts will emphasize Reading, Writing, Speaking/Listening, Language Development and Media/Technology. Through reading a diverse array of classic and contemporary literature as well as challenging informational texts in a range of subjects, students are expected to build knowledge, gain insights, explore possibilities, and broaden their perspective. The ability to write logical arguments based on substantive claims, sound reasoning, and relevant evidence is a cornerstone of the writing standards. Research is also emphasized throughout the standards but most prominently in the writing strand since a written analysis and presentation of findings is so often critical. An important focus of the speaking and listening standards is academic discussion in one-on-one, small-group, and whole-class settings. Formal presentations are one important way such talk occurs, but so is the more informal discussion that takes place as students collaborate to answer questions, build understanding, and solve problems. We also expect that students will grow their vocabularies through a mix of conversations, direct instruction, and reading. Lastly, just as media and technology are integrated in school and life in the twenty-first century, skills related to media use (both critical analysis and production of media) are integrated in Language Arts.
